'In Gratitude We Trust' TUTMC 10th Meeting of the term (2013/2014)

It's Thanksgiving! Now brush off the thoughts of roasted turkey on a silver platter because it's more than just the bird.

A trip down history tells us that the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 when Plymouth colonists and Wampanog Indians of the then America shared an autumn harvest feast. They gave thanks for a bountiful harvest after a year long ordeal where food was scarce. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving spread across the world.

Fun Fact: In the midst of the Civil War, then President Abraham Lincoln declared that a national Thanksgiving Day is to be held each November.

Alright, now let's talk turkey..

In the spirit of giving thanks for all the good things in life, TUTMC had a Thanksgiving themed meeting which included a potluck at the venue LT9.

Our Immediate Past President Zahir Ahmad, ACB, CL, called the meeting to order - in place of Valerie, TM at 10.00am. He then passed the control to our President Dylan Chew, CL. He delivered his presidential opening address by explaining the meaning and purpose of Thanksgiving itself. To get everyone upbeat, he introduced himself and shared what he was thankful for in his life. Everyone was then invited to do the same for themselves.

Dylan then passed the control over to our Toastmaster of the Morning, Lalitha, TM (it was her first time! *Salutations*) She enlightened the crowd by explaining the meaning and purpose of Thanksgiving itself.

Next she invited Sarah Abedi, TM, our invocation speaker who spoke about the magic of giving Without expecting a return.

The spotlight then shone on Kam Weng Hang, TM, our Table Topics Master of the day who managed to get 7 brave and bold souls.

'Deepavali namaste' TUTMC 9th Meeting of the term (2013/2014)

हाय (Haya), शुभ दिन! (Śubha dina) : Hi, Good day!

Diwali, also called Deepavali is a major Indian Festival that is very significant in Hinduism. Known as the ''Festival of Lights", it symbolizes the victory of the good over evil and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for human kind. The celebration focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional dipa or deeya. Fireworks are associated with the festival. Diwali is a colloquial name used in North India, while the festival is formally called Deepavali in South India.

Happy Deepavali to all our Hindu friends! It was the month of Deepavali so TUTMC tried something different and decided to have a Deepavali theme in a fresh venue at D1.08, Block D level 1, Classroom 8.

Azwan Jamaluddin the SAA for the meeting struck the wooden gavel at 10.00am sharp and started off the meeting. He then passed the control to the lovely President Dylan Chew,CL.

Dylan gave an introduction on what Deepavali is about and instead of taking all the spotlight to himself, he then asked everyone to introduce themselves, where their from and what deepavali means to them.

After everyone had their turn, the President then kindly gave the spotlight to the dashing Toastmaster of the morning (TOM)! Dylan Chew,CL (HIM AGAIN?!)

Dylan then gave a brief history on what Toastmasters and how it started. 'Ralph Chestnut Smelly, i mean Smedley!' Apparently his tongue was still asleep at that time. Without hogging over the spotlight, he quickly passed it to the Table Topics Master, Enny, TM.

Girl on the left
There were 5 flawless brave volunteers who stepped up and took on the challenge of Enny's tough (not hard la, very the easy) table topics :O

First Volunteer: If you never heard of Deepavali before but you saw the celebration, what will you call it in your own words? - Shalini, CL (Monash uni TMC)

Second Volunteer: If Deepavali is a fruit, what kind of fruit would it be?- Leon Saw,TM

Third Volunteer: If there is no D in this world, do you think they would change Deepavali into eepavali?- Melvin,TM

Forth Volunteer: (Picture) Do you think she is dancing or she just posed for the picture? What do you think?- Anushnya, TM (Sunway Uni TMC)

Fifth Volunteer: If you meet a primitive people that dont know English, how would you explain Deepavali to them?- Yun Qiu,TM

After the 5 exquisite speeches given by our members and guests, there was a RECESS!
for 10 mins...

Mingling was over after 10 mins and everyone was called back to order by the SAA

The TOM then handed the floor (not literally) to Ashikin, TM for her Table topics Evaluation.
This is her 2nd time evaluating :O
She gave a fairly good constructive criticism to all the speakers then it was time for what everyone has been waiting for! The PREPARED SPEECHES SESSION!

CCM#1 Ice breaker "Who I Am", Adam Azhar, TM

CCM#4 How To Say It " I learnt it from my Parents", Anushnya,TM

Both speakers gave an impeccable speech and both deserve a pat on the back! :) Now is the General Evaluator's (GE) turn, Fan Chen Keat, DTM (Speecom TMC). He led the..
