Post - Advance Speech Evaluation Workshop 2012

So we decided to take some time off  from our usual meetings. One reason was our

"Advance Speech Evaluation Workshop"

Date: 2nd June 2012
Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm
Venue: Lecture Theater 11, Block D,
Taylor's Lakeside Campus

The main aim of this event was to help those who attended to effectively observe and evaluate the speeches, with the idea that in doing so the evaluator him/herself may improve on their own speech craft.
The workshop was graced and conducted by a very special guest, Distinguished Toastmasters Dennis Wee of D’utama Advanced Toastmasters Club.  A Taylor’s alumni and distinguished public speaker in his own right, he guided the entire audience on the how-to’s of speech evaluation, from the very basics that beginners can pick up, to the advanced techniques used by experienced evaluators.

(Dennis attempting to extract the juices out of the audiences.)

(Crowd listening attentively)

Guest Speaker DTM Dennis Wee was more than happy to visit our club and shed his Public Speaking and Evaluation based skills onto the participants and club members.  He broke the session down into many parts addressing the critical aspects of how we perceive elements of a Great Speech from body language, vocal variety and advance speech techniques.

The highlight of the event was definitely the demonstrations the participants had to pull off!

(Hey this happens all the time!)

(No way! Are you even buying this?)

In the second half of the segment, Dennis shared on how Evaluation is complementary with practice in order to improve at ANYTHING. Without a specific feedback, how would anybody know where they lack at, or even their strong points. The audience were to be the Judges on American Idol and constructively critique the project speeches delivered.

(Dennis not slowing down even after 160 Project Speeches)

Dennis ended with a Bang by performing a voice-over of Martin Luther King's memorable speech and finally presented a Video of critically acclaimed Public Speaker & Toastmaster Darren Lacroix.
Needless to say, we need to learn to be "Ouchmasters" ourselves.

(Immediate Past President, Stephanie Teoh thanking Dennis Wee for his time with us)

The 3-hour workshop was attended by people, of which were non-members. The event ended with a group photo and Taylors Toastmasters adding in a new Competent Communicator into their growing list.

(Parting shot, Thank you passerby!)

After the event, the organizing team casually asked the participants and some members how they found the guest speaker and his content.
They LOVED him!
He was Comedic, Inspiring, Entertaining and very experienced.

The 3 hour workshop proved to be not enough because the crowd enjoyed the content.

Maybe next time, the club would consider catering a longer workshop/session for people who want a longer learning session.

Til then, don't forget to Be. Believe. Become.
